“He didn’t believe me,” Kate said, when they checked into the rustic hotel that faced a mini-mall with a large Spanish fountain at the entrance.

Brede reached for a bag filled with items they’d purchased at a discount store and led the way to their rooms. Handing her a plastic key-card and one of the bags, he pointed to a door. “That room is yours, this one is mine. I’m going to take a shower before we go to dinner. Now, unlock your door.”

“Brede, you aren’t listening to me,” she complained as she jammed the plastic card into the door and twisted the knob.

“Yes, I am,” he replied, patiently. “I listened to you all the time we were shopping and looking for a hotel to stay in. I listened to you when we checked in, and I’m listening to you right now.”

Kate bit her lip and shot him a contrite look. “I’m sorry. You’re right; I’m acting like a brat.”

Brede grinned. “Yes, you are.”

She laughed as she stepped inside the room. “Cowboy, you picked a fine time to become agreeable,” she teased.

“Lock the door,” he prompted. “And keep it locked until I come to the door to get you.”

The first thing she did after she closed the door behind her, was pull off her new boots. It took Kate the next fifteen minutes to brush her teeth, change her outfit, and comb her hair. Glancing around the room, she noted the rustic decor as well as the adjoining door to Brede’s room.

She tapped her fingertip against her chin. There was no slot for inserting the plastic key card, and no lock on the door between the two rooms. Surely, the door was nailed shut.

An imp of devilment took possession of Kate as she walked over and twisted the handle of the adjoining door.

She wasn’t certain which of them was more surprised when the door swung open.

Brede stepped out of the bathroom, wearing nothing except a towel. Kate’s heart fluttered then skipped a beat. The sight of him damp from a shower and smelling of shaving cream and soap shouldn’t have left her straining to catch her breath, but it did.

“Lost?” he asked. His biceps flexed as he scrubbed a white towel over his hair.

“No, just a tad too curious.”

He glanced at her while he finger combed his hair back from his forehead. “For some reason I’m not surprised.”

He didn’t seem at all concerned about his state of undress. Kate sucked in an unsteady breath. She’d known he was handsome, but standing half-naked rattled her.

“No snappy comeback?” he asked with a wide grin.

“Give me a second or two…” she rebounded. Her cheeks heated when she noticed how low the towel rode on his hips. The urge to let her gaze roam was great, but she resisted. She should bolt back into her room. But if she did, he’d know how much her attraction to him scared her.

She had to get a grip on reality and plant herself there.

Yeah, right, like her reality was such a magical place to be right now.
